Biothene is a type of polythene carrier bag that degrades into a NON-TOXIC residue
, carbon dioxide and water. The degradation process continues and is accelerated in landfill sights. Biothene bags are a great re-usable environmentally friendly alternative to conventional bags.At Midpac we are keen to adopt more environmentally friendly alternatives for our customers. With this in mind we have recently launched our new biothene range.

Does biothene take a long time to degrade?
The period of decay depends on the thickness of the material, the temperature and the amount of exposure to sunlight. Typically between 12-18 months from exposure. If it is exposed to direct sunlight and heat in approximately 18 months the biothene will degrade to be NON-TOXIC. Even buried in landfill sites biothene will completely degrade due to the initial exposure to sunlight.

How does biothene work?
Biothene bags have a metal ion and a catalyst added to the polythene. These additional elements react to sunlight and this reaction breaks the molecular chains in the material making it safe and environmentally friendly. -
How long has biothene existed?
The concept was developed in 1970 by the Royal forestry college in Stockholm. In 2002 additional work was done to develop the product for commercial use. -
Can biothene be recycled?
Biothene degrades into completely natural non-toxic materials so there in no need for it to be recycled. It can be used and re-used and then simply left to degrade naturally.
Since 2002 biothene has spread to become one most successful new environmentally friendly material's in production today. It is supported by packaging today, has been mentioned recently and is soon to be used in the Houses of parliament. If you visit biothene's official website http://www.biothene.co.uk/ you will see that we are one among only a handful of UK suppliers to stock this material.
Biothene bags are re-usable, eco-friendly alternative to conventional product. Biothene bags complement our jute bags and cotton bags meaning we can provide a environmentally friendly re-usable solution to our customers.
